From my direct experience with Topstep, I found that the range of trading instruments is quite focused. While Topstep does give traders access to metals and energy futures, it’s important to clarify exactly what this means. Unlike many traditional brokers, you won’t be able to trade spot gold (like XAU/USD) or spot crude oil directly. Instead, trading on Topstep is strictly limited to futures contracts through exchanges such as the CME. For someone interested in gold, I noticed only CME gold futures are available—not the spot XAU/USD pair so widely traded in the forex world. Similarly, crude oil trading at Topstep happens through energy futures contracts, not as a direct spot instrument. This distinction is crucial, as trading futures differs in margin requirements, volatility, and expiration structure compared to spot trading. Another concern for me is that Topstep operates without regulatory oversight, which has influenced my risk management approach considerably. I remain cautious engaging in their funded trader programs, especially given the high-risk flag on their profile and their lack of regulatory registration. For traders who specifically want spot forex or spot commodities, or who prioritize strong regulation, I personally would seek alternatives that clearly provide these features.
